The "Versailles of Milan"

Varese has a reputation for being the green lung of Milan. The entire area is filled with enchanting scenery and has at least nine lakes: Lake Maggiore, Lake Monate and Lake Comabbio, and the minor lakes, Ghirla, Ganna, Ceresio, Delio and Biandormo. Immense valleys conceal treasures of rare beauty and significant historical importance that many famous writers through the centuries have often immortalized in their works. Goethe and Stendhal were just two of these. Stendhal, in particular, defined Varese as the “Versailles of Milan”. It was no accident, in fact, that in the eighteenth-century this region was the favourite destination of the Lombardy aristocracy and bourgeoisie who adored spending the summer months here in their villas in the Sacro Monte hills.
