Hotel Varese, Locanda Mai Intees, Charme Hotel, Romantic Hotel

History

The Locanda dei Mai Intees takes its name from an old sonnet that tells the tale of a group of lifelong companions who, however, never understood each other: in the local dialect mai intees means "never understood". The friends used to meet at this very place to talk and play music.

The Locanda dei Mai Intees is situated in a picturesque medieval town overlooking Lake Varese with a magnificent view of the Monte Rosa Massif and the foothills of the Lombardy Alps.

Originally the Locanda was a small fifteenth-century medieval settlement, complete with square, post office, chemist's shop and a grain storehouse, which were later transformed into a single country estate by the chemist himself, from whom the current owners are descended.

The fifth generation descendants, Carlotta Pomati and her son Paolo, then converted the estate into delightful luxury four star hotel offering every comfort. The tower, the courtyard with a well and the veranda have kept their original charm. The dining room is remarkable for its fifteenth-century frescos, discovered during renovation work, and a sixteenth-century fireplace.
On the outer side of the wall surrounding the Locanda you can still see the niche in which an old fresco portraying the Madonna was placed towards the end of the Nineteenth Century, as is proven by a document dating back to 1864:

"To the right honourable Town Council of Azzate.
The undersigned Antonio Belli, on behalf of the Illustrious Widow of the late Chemist Luigi Borsa, requests from This Honourable Town Agency the permission to place in the boundary wall belonging to the Borsa property in this town, and precisely at the corner of said wall that faces the Lake and the Road that bears the same name, a fresco of the Madonna, which was removed from the old Borsa House renewed, and would be enclosed in a niche having a fixed wire netting, rising about two metres above the ground and as is represented in the Sketch outlined here.
I pray This Honourable Council to speedily grant this request, since the operation should be carried out soon, and remain with deference

Your extremely devoted and humble servant prof . Antonio Belli."

Today the niche holds a statue in memory of the fresco which has since been erased by the passage of time.
